Children and adolescents of the local teams of ActionAid Community Centre transformed the knowledge and skills they developed throughout the programme into meaningful community actions by designing and implementing two youth-led initiatives promoting inclusion, equality and respect through sport.
Working together with the support of trained youth mediators, trainers and ActionAid Hellas staff, participants took the lead in creating initiatives that challenge stereotypes and promote positive values beyond the football field.
The first initiative was the creation of a community mural on the rooftop of the ActionAid Hellas Community Centre. Designed around the theme of inclusion, the mural reflects the participants’ vision of a society where everyone belongs, regardless of their background, gender or identity. The creative process has been documented and will be shared through a short reel across the project’s social media channels, extending the initiative’s message to a wider audience.
The second initiative focused on the production of a creative awareness video inspired by FIFA player cards. The children designed their own football cards, replacing the traditional emphasis on attributes such as pace, stamina or shooting with values and social skills that are equally important both in football and in everyday life. Qualities such as respect, teamwork, empathy, fairness, became the players’ most valuable “stats”, delivering a powerful message that true success in sport is measured not only by athletic performance, but also by the way we treat others.
These initiatives demonstrate how young people can become active agents of change when given the opportunity to express their ideas and work collaboratively. By combining creativity, sport and social values, the participants developed compelling counter-narratives against discrimination and exclusion, while inspiring their local community to embrace diversity and inclusion.
